Matt & Kim are kind of like The White Stripes after Dorothy goes Technicolor. They're vibrant electro-pop to the Whites' minimalist rock, but the core of both groups' charm lies in their sassy rawness. After Matt & Kim's success with 2009's Grand, the group's growing stature has earned them a pro studio and an outside producer, and, unfortunately, part of that raw edge gets lost in thick coats of production polish. At least they still keep things light and airy, though, with cheery sing-alongs that nod to hip-hop and bubble with synths that sound filtered through an old-school Nintendo.
