Ends of the Earth
If the terms "stripped down" and "lo-fi" make you run for your ELO records, then dig Lord Huron's debut, a polyphonic panorama of indie-folk space-rock. Awash in vocal harmonies, wild instruments -- marimbas! steel drums! -- and gobs of reverb, the record succeeds in evoking the starry skies and wind-swept plains of its cover art. But there's more to it than studio wizardry. Ben Schneider's songs are equal parts Fleetwood Mac and Fleet Foxes: jaunty, swinging, atmospheric, grandiose. Start with "She Lit a Fire."
