Famous Blue Raincoat
Here you go, kiddies: Leonard Cohen, the original goth! Well, maybe that's not true, maybe Scott Walker was the first. Still, right from that opening tune ("it is your flesh that I wear") it's obvious we're dealing with a master of melancholy and mood. What's more, Cohen is keenly aware of the power of minimalism. Most of these songs, but particularly "Avalanche" and "Joan of Arc," feel so heavy, so grandiose. Yet they don't consist of much more than voice and guitar, maybe some strings. Of course, what makes them so heavy, so grandiose, is the singer-songwriter's dark, weighted passion.
