You Don't Know
Label: Blues Babe Records/Atlantic
"I'm making room for my life to grow," sings Jill Scott on "Prepared." On her fifth album, that means jettisoning her usual neo-soul sound for brassy blues ("Closure"), Aretha-styled soul ("Back Together"), '60s Motown backbeats ("Coming to You") and, most audaciously, a psychedelic gospel spoken-word piece ("Say Thank You"). Despite the musical cacophony, she sounds less tortured than on her 2011 album, The Light of the Sun. She brims with confidence as she goes "Cruisin' on the evening breeze to clear my mind/ Take my time so I can breathe," and embarks on her journey to "Beautiful Love."
