With the British Invasion in the process of conquering America's teen-pop market, Jan & Dean released its last, and greatest, surf album, 1964's Dead Man's Curve / New Girl in School. The best thing about this record is Jan Barry's production. Though rarely acknowledged as such, he was very much Beach Boy Brian Wilson's equal at this point in his career. The album's biggest hit, "Dean Man's Curve," is a glorious piece of symphonic pop -- lush, layered and utterly cinematic in its grandeur. Another nugget is "Bucket 'T'," a slice of avant-pop masquerading as a mindless hot-rod anthem.
