Just Tryin ta Live

Southern hip-hop isn't known for its laid back, blunted emcees -- that's more the province of the West Coast indie scene -- but Devin is an anomaly. He has a sluggish flow that perfectly matches his beats' dreamy soul, but Devin is also a very descriptive emcee, and much of the album's charm arises from his attention to the minutia of hood life and his subsequent pot-induced apathy for the usual gangsta games that rappers either celebrate or rail against. "Why you so mad at the world when all you got to do is hustle?" he asks on "Go Somewhere."
