"Thank God I'm alive!" Natasha Khan belts out on "Lilies," the opener to her third album as Bat for Lashes. And it's not the only time she tries to verify her existence: "I feel alive," she moans on "Oh Yeah"; "I was alive," she adds on "Horses of the Sun." So it's hard to say who's doing the haunting here: Her crystallized purrs sound more ethereal than earthly, especially as they glide gracefully through a sea of strings, horns, chanting choirs, tribal percussion and throbbing synths. But when she strips some of that musical mass away, like on standout "Laura," it's even more otherworldly.
